What is MCP1703?

The MCP1703 is a 3 pin SOT-223 fixed output CMOS low dropout (LDO) voltage regulator. The input operating range is listed as 2.7V to 16V, making it an excellent choice for applications requiring two to six main cells, as well as 9V alkaline and one or two cell Li-Ion batteries. MCP1703 has a 0.4 percent output voltage tolerance at 25°C and a maximum of 3% over the -40°C to +125°C operational temperature range. At 25°C, line regulation is typically 0.1 percent. When only 1F output capacitance is used, the LDO output is stable. Electrolytic capacitors made of ceramic, tantalum, or aluminum can be utilized for input and output. For any application, the overcurrent limit and over-temperature shutdown give a reliable solution.

The MCP1703 can be used as a low quiescent current voltage reference as well as a regulator. The initial precision of the reference can be calibrated using production test equipment or a ratio measurement in many microcontroller applications.
